Canada: PSVR 2 Patent Application Reveals Details of Potential New Controller

Published on Feb 7, 2022

As reported by Tom’s Guide, Sony is currently working on a successor to the PlayStation VR (“PSVR”).

Although Sony has not provided many official updates about the new PSVR, a patent application filed on Feb. 26, 2021 may reveal details about a possible new controller.

The images filed with the patent application show a device similar to the official render of the PSVR 2 controller that Sony previously revealed, with a few notable additions. The new renderings include several black dots on each controller, and some of the dots appear to correlate with the device’s tracking points. According to the filing, “the present invention improves the stability of detecting a light-emitting unit by using a camera,” presumably referring to the PS5 HD camera.

While Sony has not yet finalized the official render, the patent application provides interesting potential insights to the next PSVR system.
