Alfaro Abogados' Project for the Global Impact–WLG Initiative 2024:
Commitment to Digital Inclusion through Fundación Equidad.
At Alfaro Abogados, we have chosen to engage with Fundación Equidad, a non-profit organization based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, that has been dedicated to reducing the digital devices for over 20 years. Through their continuous efforts, Fundación Equidad aligns its initiatives with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and the circular economy (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle), working to promote equal access to technological education for both youth and adults.
One of the foundation's primary endeavors is its technology recycling program.
By repurposing unused or outdated equipment, whether fully operational or with functioning components, Fundación Equidad breathes new life into discarded technology. Their workshop receives over 1.7 tons of obsolete computers annually, recycling and donating between 2,000 and 3,000 refurbished devices to institutions and schools that need them for their projects.
The recycling process involves five key steps:
1) Receiving the donated equipment.
2) Reconditioning the devices in their workshop.
3) Separating electronic waste for special disposal, managed by certified recycling entities to ensure environmental protection.
4) Selecting refurbished devices according to the specific needs of each institution.
5) Donating the equipment to applicants registered through an open and transparent process, helping reduce the social digital divide.
This initiative embodies the principles of the circular economy. The recycling of hardware not only reduces electronic waste but also minimizes the environmental impact of disposal. The concepts of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle are effectively applied, while the social component brings this full circle. The technology, once recycled, reaches communities in need, providing them with valuable resources for education and empowerment.
At Alfaro Abogados, our commitment to this sustainability project extends beyond our firm. We have actively encouraged our clients to get involved, acting as intermediaries to facilitate donations to Fundación Equidad. This collaborative approach strengthens the impact of the project, ensuring more individuals and organizations contribute to reducing the digital divide.
