What advice would you give to a young female associate looking to make partner/advance her career?

Associates are asked to focus on learning and perfecting the law. To advance or become a partner these skills need to pivot to 'running a business'. The sooner associates can expose themselves to these other skills, the sooner they will be capable and experienced enough to become partner. So take the speaking slot, lead the working group, run a client relationship - what you will learn here will make all the difference.

How do you balance your career and personal life?

Working in a law firm means that there is always too much work to fit into a day. This will always mean a bit of chaos and priority juggling that we need to get used to. I suggest finding ways to prioritize yourself - fit in that call with a family member, pop out for a quick walk in the sunshine, or catch up with an old colleague over coffee. A well-balanced life makes for a happy colleague and a fulfilling career.

What book/podcast/film has shaped a new perspective for you that has led to a positive outcome in your career?

I am reading 'Playing Big' by Tara Mohr. There are so many words/phrases that undermine women in the workplace. For me it is the word "just". Since I have dropped this word from my vocabulary, I sound less apologetic, and come across clearer and more decisive. I suggest just giving it a try. Give it a try (far more confident!)
