World Law Group Elects New Regional Directors

Washington, D.C./Delegates representing member firms in the WLG’s three regions – the Americas, Asia-Pacific and EMEA – selected new members to serve on the organization’s Board of Directors.

WLG’s Regional Directors, who represent their respective regions’ interests on the Board, serve two-year terms, as do other Board members. Among other things, they are also responsible for organizing annual regional conferences and the regional meetings held at each WLG semi-annual conference. Regional Directors are elected in alternate years to that of other members to provide for some leadership continuity between Boards.

WLG’s new Regional Directors are:

For the Americas: Maria Elisa Gualandi Verri, is a member of TozziniFreire’s Executive Committee, co-head of the firm’s Corporate/M&A practice, and head of its Corporate Social Investment area and of the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion program. She is based in São Paulo, Brazil and has been recognized by Chambers, The Legal500, Who’s Who Legal, IFLR1000 and others.

Maria Elisa has been a WLG Key Contact Partner for years and regularly attends WLG semi-annual conferences. She also participates in WLG’s Member Firm Leaders Forum and previously served on its Board of Directors.

Maria Elisa succeeds Jorge León Orantes B. of Santamarina y Steta in Mexico City, Mexico as Regional Director for the Americas.

For Asia/Pacific: Pamela Kung, a partner with Shearn Delamore & Co. in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has a broad practice advising on banking and debt capital market transactions, corporate debt restructuring, and providing regulatory advice on financial services related matters. She also deals with private wealth and succession planning, and advises on trusts and foundation structures.

Pamela has served as a WLG Key Contact Partner for her firm for years and regularly attends WLG semi-annual conferences. She has been recognized by The Legal 500, Who’s Who, Chambers and others for her work.

Pamela succeeds Andrew Ang of WongPartnership in Singapore as Regional Director for Asia/Pacific.

For EMEA: Gaël Chuffart has been a partner in Employment Law at CMS Belgium in Brussels since 2013. He advises clients on a wide range of employment law and social security matters. He is a specialist in collective labor relations, individual labor law, remuneration conditions, pension schemes and the use of technology in the workplace.

Gaël has been recommended by The Legal 500 and regularly publishes articles on and speaks about a variety of labor topics. He is a WLG Key Contact Partner who regularly attends our semi-annual and regional conferences, and is a Co-Chair of our HR Law Group.

Gaël succeeds John Hammond of CMS Germany as Regional Director for EMEA.

During the opening plenary of the fall eConference, WLG President Christian Traichel, a partner with Taylor Wessing in Munich, Germany, thanked the outgoing Regional Directors for their two years of dedicated service and thoughtful guidance. He also welcomed the new Regional Directors to the Board, noting that their comprehensive knowledge of the legal markets in their respective regions, as well as their solid relationships with other WLG member firms in those regions, would enable them to fill their roles admirably.

Other WLG Board members currently include:

  • Mr. Luc Attlan, a partner with Faegre Drinker Biddle in Illinois, U.S.A., who serves as Secretary.
  • Mr. Philippe Johnson, a partner with Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg in Québec, Canada, who serves as Treasurer.
  • Ms. Georgia Chang, a partner with Formosa Transnational in Taipei, Taiwan, who is a Director.
  • Mr. Scott Guan, a partner with Zhong Lun in Shanghai, China, who also serves as a Director.
  • Ms. Janet Levy Pahima, a partner with Herzog, Fox & Neeman in Tel Aviv, Israel, who is also a Director.

All of the above as well as President Christian Traichel are now serving the second year of their two-year terms on the WLG Board.
