Brazil: TozziniFreire's Alternative Investment Event Draws Attention to Trends and Opportunities
Addressing a hot topic that brings several opportunities in the Brazilian market, TozziniFreire Advogados held, on August 24, 2023, an event about investments in innovation, venture capital and special situations.
Opened by Alexei Bonamin, partner in the firm's Capital Markets practice, the event provided four panel discussions featuring 13 panelists.
"The idea of organizing this kind of event arose from feedback received from clients and market participants on priority verticals for investments. Brazil has a very large potential for Alternative Investments and we have been seeing more and more investment funds and investors allocating resources in that asset class", points out Alexei Bonamin.
Moderated by Ana Carolina Calil, partner in the Infrastructure and Energy practices at TozziniFreire Advogados, the panel on Renewable Energies addressed the experiences of Carolina Rocha, Cristina Penteado, Eliane Lustosa, and Mauro Andrade with investments or specific projects in renewable energies. The highlight of the discussion was devoted to the great opportunity that Brazil has to act on green hydrogen, as an input for industrialization.
The second panel was about Private Equity (PE), Venture Capital (VC) and Corporate Venture Capital (CVC), as well as their challenges and lessons learned, both from startups and investment banks perspectives. Additionally, the panel drew attention to the Venture Capital's point of view on new ways of investing, considering the “green economy” and conscious capitalism regarding the expectations placed on the sustainable market. This panel was mediated by Maria Bofill, partner in the Private Equity and Venture Capital practice at TozziniFreire Advogados, Juliana Maluf, also partner at the firm, Julia de Luca, Luciana Ribeiro and Philippe Schlumpf.
The third panel dealt with Special Situations featuring Debora Seripierri, Guilherme Ferreira, Luiza Oswald, and Mariana Gauer as panelists. Moderated by Gabriela Martines, partner in the Restructuring and Insolvency practice at TozziniFreire, the guests discussed the development of the investment market in distressed assets, particularly in special situations. Which made managers specializing in stressed assets have doubled in size in the last five years.
To address market trends, Beatriz Seixas, partner in the Banking & Finance practice at TozziniFreire Advogados, moderated the conversation with Karina Saade, CEO of BlackRock Brasil, who brought key insights on strategies for allocating foreign investments to the Brazilian market, as well as alternative investments class worldwide.
João Busin, partner in the Mergers and Acquisitions at TozziniFreire Advogados, closed the event, which was organized by the firm's Alternative Investments team.
